Dear Students,
I need your help! I started a new book this week, but I did not like it. The author kept jumping around from past to present and the character's names were so difficult that I had to keep re-reading to keep it all straight. BLECH! I don't know what to read next. I have some ideas, but nothing that is really grabbing my attention yet. Could you please recommend a book that will make me want to sit on the couch and read, read, read? I would be so grateful for your help.
I enjoy stories with strong heroes who have a great obstacle to overcome. My two favorite settings are foreign lands or American cities. I would like it to be a full length novel, but not 60o pages, so I can read it in a day or two. A heartwarming twist is a plus and so is great humor. Most importantly, I real enjoy books when the author uses great flowing language. I do not like writing that is choppy or the plot jumps around. I love creative, vivid language that paints a picture in my mind. Please recommend an awesome book for me!
Here's what I need
1. title and author
2. genre
3. A very brief summary. Don't spoil the ending for me!
4. Reasons why I will like this book. (Hint- see above). Is this a 5 star book or a 2 star?
5. Tell me how long it is and how difficult you thing k it is. Easy read? Challenging? Just right?
Thanks!!!!!!!

One book I really love: Life as We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer. The genre is basically science-fiction, which I ordinarily wouldn't even touch with a ten-foot pole, but this novel overcomes the genre barrier. It's really fascinating and perfect for teens, 330 pgs long. I first read it in the 7th grade and couldn't stop until I finished. It was like a car crash you can’t tear your eyes away from. I've re-read it several times and it's still just as AMAZING.
ReplyDeleteThe teenaged protagonist’s (Miranda’s) world is forever changed when a meteor strikes the moon and alters its orbit. This book made me really appreciate how precious and fragile and important the structure of our solar system really is. It’s also a really touching story about how one strong family comes together to deal with a horrific change of circumstances. Miranda’s story is one every kids needs to hear. I mean that; there’s a very important lesson to be learned here. American teens are wrong to take advantage of their blessings. Check this book out!!!
This is a cool book. It's CIRQUE DU FREAK. It is a horror book by Darren Shan. It's a bout a boy who went to a freak show, one of those freak is a vampire wo has a awesome spider. Dan the boy came and stole the spider after the show. When he stole the spider it bit he's best friend. The only person who can help save the boy is the owner, the owner wants dan to be his vampire assistant. It will be a good holloween book.
ReplyDeletei have a fairly good read. the title is "The Secret of Nimh" its an older book written in 1971 by Robert C O'Brien. Its about a little family of feild mice. Ms. Frisby the main mouse has a son with pneumonia and has to get help from the rats of NIMH and its a story of her journey to help her son. It is an older book but it is a very sweet story and its about 249 pages. it an enchanting story of the things this family faces and works through to help eachother i would mabey say a 3.5 to a 4 star book
ReplyDeleteIt's been a while since I found anything worth reading, but I must say, I'm absolutley eating this book up. I can't put it down! It's called The Lighting Thief, by Rick Riordan and it is one of the funniest books I've read in a very long time. Where else can you find chapter titles like, "I Accidentally Vaporize my Pre-Algebra Teacher," or "Grover Unexpectedly Loses his Pants"?
ReplyDeleteI've only read a few chapters so far, but the book appears be about a twelve-year-old boy living in New York City who is somehow connected to Greek gods. I've always had an interest in Greek mythology, so this book gets extra points for that.
Oh my goodness. Many of you haven't posted yet, but I really enjoyed all the feedback in class. I went to Barnes and Nobles this weekend and well, went a little nuts buying books. I bought the new Dan Brown novel,The Lost Symbol (should be underlined) in large print, to start with for myself and I will pass it along. A few of you reccomended Cirque du Freak and I found that in an anime version. I also bought Inkheart that a few of you mentioned. It looks terrific. To add to our folk tales unit, I found a copy of Stone Soup, which I look forward to reading to you. Probably my favorite purchase was The Lightening Thief and I agree with Megan. I actually found myself laughing aloud in the store as I read a few pages. I don't likw fantasy, but this is an interesting cross of realistic fiction, myth and fantasy. Best of all is the ironic, witty, dry humor. If you know me, you know I love hyperbole (like in Maniac Magee) and this has loads of it.
ReplyDeleteHappy reading folks!

ReplyDeleteAs many of you know, I loved to read in elementary school, but when 6th grade hit I stopped reading for pleasure. Like many of you I watched a lot of tv, hung out with my friends and avoided reading like swine flu. Believe it or not, I didn't start enjoying reading again until just a few years ago. Maybe I am picking where I left off because I LOVE adolescent (teen) literature. I do read adult historical fiction and lots of non-fiction, but I wanted to post my middle school "must read" books for you to enjoy on your own. I am not including many of the great books often read for LA classes. These books are my taste and have been most popular with my students.

ReplyDeleteI will recomend the Mysterious Benidict Society by Trendon lee Stewart to anyone, because it is somthing that makes you really think when a code or problem comes up. Its genre is kind of a mixture of adventure and mystery. Also it is very thick ,but it is actually not as hard as it looks, it is at a medium level.I give it 4 1/2 stars -Alex
